How It Works
- Solar collector panels are installed on your roof along with a water storage tank (normally nearby on the side of your house).
- Cold water sits in the collector until the energy in the sun’s rays heats the water up.
- The hot water is circulated to the storage tank using either a pump or thermosyphoning. In most systems this is done when the water reaches a certain temperature.
- The hot water is replaced in the collector by cold water from the bottom of the storage tank thus creating a water cycle.
- The pre-heated water is stored in the tank until it is needed.
- The hot water is taken from the top of the storage tank (hot water rises just like air) and distributed to your shower or hot water tap.
- To ensure that there is always hot water available the system has a back-up heat source. This can be a gas booster (the most effecient), gas storage tank or an electric element. If the water is not hot enough the back-up system will activate automatically.
