How much does a solar battery cost?

Like solar panels, the cost of solar batteries has decreased since the technology first emerged for households.

As of January 2022, batteries generally start around $6000 and can range all the way up to $20,000 or more for a large, grid connected system. For off grid systems, this will be higher.

The cost of your solar battery will depend on a number of factors, including:

  • the size of the battery (the bigger the battery, the more you’ll pay)
  • the type of battery (battery chemistry, voltage and quality all impact the price)
  • the brand (like many consumer goods, some brands cost more than others).

Whether you’re eligible for any government rebates, such as the Victorian solar battery rebate, will also impact the final price you pay.

It’s more cost effective to install a battery when your solar system is being installed rather than later down the track. This is because you can combine installation costs and you could start saving more with your battery (than you might with just solar panels) from the outset, cutting down the system’s overall payback period.

However, that’s not to say adding a battery to an existing solar system isn’t also worth it. Batteries can increase a household’s use of solar power significantly, thus delivering substantially higher savings on their energy bill.
